National Train Day

UPDATE 5/13/2023: Despite the rainy forecast, the LJR&BA will still be celebrating National Train Day on Saturday, May 13. Some events will take place in the Rollins Community Center. Come out and see the driving of the golden spike and visit our newly restored caboose.

The Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association (LJRBA) invites you to join us in celebrating the railroading history of Lewes on National Train Day, Saturday, May 13th. The day’s events will be centered at the historic Lewes Junction site, home of our recently restored caboose.

• Our friends at the Lewes Public Library will start the day with children’s activities at 10:00 am, including a model railroad display courtesy of the Shoreline Garden Railroad Club.
• LJRBA’s program begins at 12:00 pm in front of the red caboose in Stango Park and will feature invited speakers, recognition of our supporters, and the official christening of the caboose and ceremonial driving of our own golden spike into the restored railroad track. The caboose will be open for public viewing.
• Next door in the Rollins Community Center, at 1:30 pm, the Lewes Historical Society will offer a lecture on the railroad’s importance to Lewes and Sussex County.
• Concluding the day’s festivities, Doug Poore, author of several books on Delaware railroad history, will present a lecture at 2:30 pm in the library.

National Train Day commemorates the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 when a final, golden spike was driven into the track at Promontory, Utah, to connect the east and west coasts of North America.
